Darlington Terrace – Lead paint remediation

In 2023 we safely remediated a terrace in Darlington.

The entrance wall tested positive for lead and the paint was peeling because of moisture.
We stripped the paint to reveal the original render.

The study tin ceiling also tested positive for lead and we removed the paint to reveal the clean tin.

We applied the Let’s Clean Heritage Cleaner. All trim was wet sanded as per guidelines.

The house looks like new and was safe to inhabit after we had finished.

Highly Recommend. The painting was done beautifully and Rohan's attention to detail is impressive, as are his recommendations for type of paint/colour/texture etc. Continued updates on timing/estimates etc was exceptional. Leaving aside the disruption of having most of your house painted at the one time - we could not have asked for a more lovely and professional team of people to be in the house at 7am each morning! I was referred to Rohan and the MIW team after I had some significant damp remediation work done. This was absolutely the best referral I have ever had.

There were many surprises along the way, but they were good surprises. Imagine a trade professional that sends you a calendar invite for the quote session, a team that turns up on time EVERY single time (I found them waiting outside some mornings, so they hit the doorbell at 7am exactly), daily email updates (I was away for some of the week), an EXCEPTIONAL attention to detail (I am quite detailed but this was next level), the paint job is gorgeous and MIW chased me (chased me) to ensure I was completely happy before the final invoice was issued. I could go on but you get the idea. Amazing service. You won't regret choosing MIW.

I selected Men in White based on a referral, and it was accurate. They are very detailed in their work, and clean up after their work really well. They transformed elderly painted brick which was peeling, with some moss in parts, into well prepared and painted walls. They dealt well with difficult painting surfaces. They were punctual and worked hard. I was kept well informed of progress, and they were happy to answer any questions I had. I am very happy with the work which was done. I appreciate the quality of the work and the communication.

We employed Men in White to paint the exterior of our 1920s California Bungalow home and found their workmanship to be of the highest quality. The team were meticulous in their paint preparation work, including cleaning, sanding off the old paint, repairing any old woodwork damage and protecting the paths, brickwork and windows. We used Men In White to paint our home when we moved in in 2019 and just had them back in to help us with some touch up work (we had some water leaks and new air conditioners installed that were a different size). Their professionalism is just great - Rohan and the team are organised, prompt, and very efficient to work with. We chose Men in White to safely deal with the lead paint in our terrace house. They gave us so much more than that - a wonderful finished job (after many colour consultations), constant communications and feedback during the work, and great attention to detail. Our job wasn't easy but Rohan and team took a lot of the anxiety from the process by helping us with the many problems in the house and patiently making helpful suggestions to resolve issues. (This included recommending other tradespeople who were all reliable and did a good job.)

We highly recommend Rohan's Men in White. Once work commenced, Rohan clearly communicated with us every step along the way. His team - Andre, Louis, and Nicolas were meticulous in their preparation and attention to detail. They were careful to minimise dust and cleaned up at the end of every day. They informed us the finished paintwork would be “perfect” and we weren’t disappointed; we are incredibly impressed. They went above and beyond our expectations, for example, who would have guessed painters could repair the cause of our leaking chimney, where other tradespeople failed to do so? Rohan and his team provide exceptional service & the kind of service that is way beyond expectations. From the care taken to match existing paint schemes by providing colour tests, to the courtesy to ensure waste is disposed of appropriately and house rules established before starting work. The care when completing the paint work is exceptional to ensure it is immaculate and the site cleanup after completion left our place cleaner than before they started! Rohan and his team are also just great people so it’s a joy to work with them & special mention to Andre! We also had quite a challenging job that was added partway through the main paint work to restore our kitchen hoop pine plywood joinery and Paperock kitchen bench tops. I can not recommend Rohan and the MIW team highly enough. Rohan gave excellent advice on what we needed to do with painting our house and it turned out so beautifully - especially the detail in our old cornices. The care the team took throughout was incredible - preparing the surfaces and making sure there was no mess. They even polished our window fittings!
They did so much more than painting for us - in the process of preparing the walls, we found many issues with damp. Rohan not only helped us find an excellent tradesman to help repair our walls, but he liaised with them for us, and was very kind and patient about the delays to the painting this caused.
Communication was excellent throughout and we really appreciated Rohan's guidance. We could not have got our house ready without him!

Our job was particularly difficult, it was more a restoration job as we discovered a 100 year old wall of advertising that needed cleaning and sealing. Rohan visited the site to discuss and from that point on we were involved in the process till the end. Our request for the team to take their time and consult with us was greatly appreciated. 1st meeting with Rohan of MIW today, he arrived right-on-time to our home for an On-site inspection upon our request for a quotation – Painting services of our 3 Bedrooms Apartment .

Rohan has indeed presented himself professional, courteous, responsive, a good communicator and very experienced with his specialist trade “ Painting & Décor “ for 17 years.

He is the first and probably the only company that can provide a detailed quotation immediately after an hour consultation receiving all our requirements on this job. I was presently surprised and impressed with his efficiency, it is obvious that he manages his business effectively, and applies the same to daily works and deliverables to all his clients.

Based on our conversation, I understand that Rohan and his team of painters do not take shortcuts. They pay attention to details on each process of the job ( protection, preparation through to the details of repairing prior to each layer of the painting to completion ), this reflects on his price and time frames required to finish each job to a high standard that meet his signature brand of MIW.

Our job will start in August, and therefore will have to wait.

Without experience of the hands-on works from his team at this stage, I am confident to say that MIW is a good company and will honour their deliverables if any new client wishes to consider them for good painting services for their homes / commercial spaces and others. Happy to recommend and support MIW.

We used Men In White to safely encapsulate the lead paint in our old 1920's house and make it safe for our child. They did a wonderful job! Rohan was professional and spent a lot of time going through our job in detail and answering all our questions. Rohan was incredible to work with from day 1. He came on site to provide an inspection before providing a final quote. Rohan was happy to do the best job possible within our budget, especially since we are young first home buyers. In doing so, he helped us prioritise the most important restoration activities to focus on too. Rohan was always communicative, super helpful when we had questions and overall a pleasure to work with. Always a pleasure to work with Rohan and MIW - he is about as friendly and professional as they come. For our little apartment repaint he prepared a briefing document for his team that was several pages long, and shared it with me beforehand to ensure it was up to scratch and fully detailed (including many points I’d not have thought of). He took the time to ask about other work that was planned and incorporated this into his brief so that the job wouldn’t be affected down the track by other trades (eg, removal of bathroom mirror and painting behind it).
Men in White were also able to identify and perfectly match the shade of white that was originally used 12 years ago, which gave a totally seamless finish.
Two days later the apartment looks brand new and the work areas were left cleaner than before the job started. Couldn’t recommend Men in White highly enough. Thanks for a flawless job team!

If there was a possibility of giving more than 5 stars I would. I have used MIW twice to repaint my unit in preparation for rental or sale. The professionalism of MIW is exemplary from the initial visit and quotation to the finishing touches to the job (see photo). Rohan notices small details and checks whether you want them attended to. Rohan's project management and his and his team's reliability, competence and friendliness is flawless and the finished job is excellent. The attention to cleanup and leaving the site better than they found it is especially appreciated. I recommend MIW without qualification and would engage them without hesitation for future jobs.

In life you get what you pay for but honestly for this tiny premium, it is absolutely worth it!
Rohan comes well prepared for everything. From initial inspection until the final safety sign was removed he kept us informed every step of the way.
He does not force his ideas on you, but rather asks the questions which lead you to the right conclusion.
His painters and handymen are fully briefed on every task, nothing is left to chance. The quality of the workmanship is exceptional.
One of his painting requirements was to strip back some outdoor steps with years (100+yrs) of heavy duty paint on them. So glad we did not simply paint over them as we had initially requested, Rohan suggested we go the hard but ultimately more sustainable way and bring them back to their terracotta federation glory.
We will have him come back for further work.

The whole experience of having our home painted inside and out has been quite extraordinary using MIW. The home looks absolutely beautiful. The experience has been very easy. They paid attention to every detail and have left the house spotlessly clean. Rohan worked within our budget to carefully prepare, and where necessary repair, our inner city Sydney terrace. He communicated clearly and often throughout the whole project. He used his creativity and imagination to come up with solutions to the unexpected. He and his entire team have been courteous respectful not only to us but to our neighbours as well. Rohan and Choi from MIW did an outstanding job to restore and rejuvenate the stairs in our inner-city terrace.

Our stairs are dreadfully steep, and with limited options to improve the physical structure Rohan devised a plan to prepare them and treat them to allow continued safe passage of me and my family up and down whilst also making them visually appealing and fit the character of our home.

Rohan and his team did a great job painting our exterior poolside panels at Wylie's Baths in Coogee. We were very impressed with his solution-oriented approach to unforeseen complications of the job. From quoting, to colour selection, to site establishment, to touch-ups and clean up- communication was frequent, clear, and consultative. We also had a strict deadline, which Rohan and the team ensured was met (working around wet weather and on weekends to complete the job). The guys were super friendly and professional, with great attention to detail (using mirrors on the last day to ensure that the bottoms of all the surfaces were fully covered). We are very happy with the finished work from Men In White and would definitely recommend their services.

Can't go past Men in White for a body corporate job!

I help manage the body corporate of a large apartment block in Darlinghurst/Rushcutters. Rohan/Men in White have been painting our apartment block for many years now and have done an outstanding job! Diligent, attentive, polite, and work very well in a busy block with many tenants.

Like all large blocks, we couldn't yet repaint the whole thing in one go. Men in White were great painting areas that we wanted to fix up now. And we slowly update area by area when ready.

Our block also required specialist works with water damaged brick fences (north facing) and they were excellent. Looks brand new after extensive prep work done, when other painters would have done a light scrape and just painted over the top!

And I can't recommend Rohan highly enough as a manager of the project. It takes a lot of work to coordinate repainting of front doors of 45 units. Contacting each tenant and follow up to get access etc.

Rohan and his team sanded and painted a dark wooden entrance hall ballastrade a beautiful off-white, then sanded, colour matched, stained and varnished the stair treads. A very difficult job to match the parquet flooring .

We engaged Men in White to paint the outside of our 1886 free-standing house. This was a special project because the job involved using Porter’s Mineral Paint on the rendered walls which we had already completely stripped of old paint. The preparation by the painters was critical and the result is truly stunning. Rohan communicated throughout both verbally and with written updates (with photos) using Evernote. I hadn’t used Evernote before but I found it really helpful. We were surprised at Rohan’s professionalism and patience; this was very important to us. His team were great too and we really want to thank them for bringing our home back to life. We have been here 41 years and this is the first time we have had it painted. Our 1886 house looks new again!

Rohan and his team just completed a complete paint of our apartment. Having had very mixed success with tradespeople in the past, I was concerned whether I had chosen the right team. After dealing with Rohan initially I could see he was a skilled communicator, something lacking in many companies. Once things got underway I relaxed more, knowing that when issues did arise, it was not going to be difficult to sort. Mark and the team (Dave, Tony, Ken and Sam) were hardworking, skilful and respectful with our property. Everything was seamless from start to finish and the results were outstanding. I cannot recommend Men In White highly enough and will definitely use them again in the future.

Could not have asked for better service. Best painters I have come across. They have such attention to detail and willing to listen to the client and their requirements. Follow up was perfect with the end product looking great. Excellent clean up also. Highly recommended!
